Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Augusta, Maine!
In southern Maine, mid-coast between Waterville and Lewiston, the heart of state capital Augusta lines both sides of the Kennebec River along Water Street. Augusta's most notable architectural feature is the elegant domed State House, built of Maine granite in 1829 two years after becoming the state capital and designed by noted architect Charles Bulfinch. Both Augusta and neighboring Hallowell have roots as Native American villages, with pilgrims arriving in 1625 to begin trade along the Kennebec. The region's history unfolds at the Maine State Museum, with more than 2,000 artifacts dating from the Ice Age through the 1800s. Augusta's circa 1754 Fort Western, used by Benedict Arnold during the American Revolution, ranks as New England's oldest surviving wooden fort. Augusta doubles as a gateway to the China and Belgrade Lakes regions, renowned as resorts for boating, angling, and swimming. Ernest Thompson wrote On Golden Pond while staying in Belgrade, and it's now possible to ride in the mail boat made famous by the movie offshoot as it delivers along Great Pond. Hotel options within Greater Augusta range from well-known national brands to independently owned inns and B&Bs.
